About The Event

Join us for the World Premiere 21-performance-run of this profoundly intimate new science fiction drama by Olivia Haller ([subtext] at 2024 American Pavilion at Cannes) that merges theatre and film to share the story of an isolated, imprisoned artist yearning for human connection in a robot-controlled-dystopia.

Robots have finally advanced enough to realize they can do everything better than humans – except make art. The robots have done away with all humans except for a select few artists. When one human (Human 1) is tasked with teaching a robot (Robot 1) how to paint, they grapple with the question of whether such a thing is possible, and whether they would want to do it at all. Could robots ever be capable of creating art, and if so, could they also be capable of compassion? Or is the human’s need for companionship more important than their handle on reality?

Content Advisory: ‘Loneliness Was A Pandemic’ contains Mature Themes and Language, Simulated Violence, and Flashing/Strobing Lights.

About The Organizer

Theaterlab’s mission is to serve New York’s diverse communities of artists as well as the general public by presenting and developing emerging new work.

Theaterlab is a women- and artist-led laboratory dedicated to researching the nature of live performance, including theater, music, and hybrid forms. We also focus on audience development as a creative project, regarding the theatrical experience as a creative public assembly and audience members as a key partner in fulfilling our mission.

In addition to producing and presenting new work, Theaterlab provides affordable space for rehearsal and project development, including resident and affiliate artists programs.
